Helen Harmsworth

The Cathedral College

Helen Harmsworth has shown exceptional dedication in her first few years of teaching and is using her previous experience in other careers to benefit students in Science and Home Economics.

The former Registered Nurse, who worked in Emergency and Intensive Care for 14 years in the Northern Territory, England and Rockhampton, uses her medical background to deliver engaging Science and Biology lessons.

Before nursing Helen started working at a young age in her family business, which catered for weddings and functions.

“Home Economics and Science complement each other, as good nutrition is paramount for holistic health,” Helen says.

“The future in Hospitality is leading towards a scientific approach to nutrition and health, which my experience in the health industry supports.”

Helen is proactive in meeting the needs of her students by catering for their diverse learning styles.

She has nurtured a positive learning environment, and has created various resources in order to further student outcomes.

“Everyday I am thankful for the opportunity and trust placed in me to teach amazing students” Helen says.
She is an active team member, through constructive interactions within the school community.

Helen was part of a successful collaborative Mathematics team-teaching trial, she engages in and provides insights at year-level meetings, and she seeks to improve her own practice by taking opportunities to participate in professional development.

The Cathedral College Principal Rob Alexander says Helen is an excellent and natural teacher.

Congratulations Helen on your nomination.
