Kathryn Barry

The Southport School

In her tenure as the Deputy Head of Prepatory School, Kathryn Barry has been instrumental in improving overall student results through effective implementation of pedagogy.

She implemented Marzano’s Art and Science of Teaching, a specific learning philosophy, across Prepatory School, and has created resources that have aided classroom teachers in adopting this new framework.

Kathryn also harnessed online technology to provide effective tabulation of data relating to how teachers are using the Art and Science of Teaching framework.

She has created a safe environment for teachers to adopt this strategy and supports them throughout the process.

Kathryn has also integrated specific educational research and neuroscience with Marzano’s learning philosophy, ensuring students’ learning potential is maximised.

She has also introduced literacy programs that have improved results for all students across Preparatory School (P-6), and successfully combined digital literacies with a new reading framework.

Her commitment to student learning has seen Mathematics classes in Grade 3 to 6 being streamed across Prepatory School, with allowances to cater for the different styles of learners across these grades, including opportunity for acceleration

The staff who work under Kathryn are constantly supported through all these programs. She leads and implements professional development sessions that encompass not only frontline classroom teaching staff, but all staff involved with the learning of students.

Feedback is also important for successful implementation of Kathryn’s programs. She has created various feedback programs to find out if new curricular frameworks are working, and to provide teachers with effective peer-to-peer coaching feedback.

She has been described by her colleagues as “empathetic, trustworthy and a visionary”.

Congratulations Kathryn on your nomination.
