When you walk into Steven Tucker’s classroom you will see arcade machines he built running student made games, and a large TV running a software program he coded, called ‘GF Capture the Flag’ which teaches students how to code autonomous bots.
At lunchtime, students come in to Steven’s Varsity College classroom to undertake 3D printing and work on coding projects.
After school, you will find his students watching video tutorials or participating in an online course, which Steven created to ensure all students learning styles are catered for.
The former Griffith University lecturer creates his exciting teaching environments based on tools and concepts he examined in a paper he co-authored and published in the Second International Conference on e-Learning and e-Technologies in Education.
Using student-centred approaches to teaching, Steven integrates short feedback loops and student choice to ensure success. He has developed numerous tools to implement these, including his online course and software programs. The course, software and materials have also been made available to students and colleagues outside of Varsity College.
“Steven’s online course has approximately 200 enrolments across 6 schools where students are able to ask coding questions,” his nomination form states.
More than 150 teachers across Queensland have requested access to Steven’s resources.
Steven, who has also worked in industry and the vocational education and training (VET) sector, has often demonstrated the online course site, materials, software and workflow to parents at evening events.
He has also organised and presented a professional development event at The Southport School last year and has been a keynote speaker at QSITE events at the Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba.
“Steven is actively building a community around his software tools and resources,” his nomination states.
“Steven’s goal is to grow a network of expert teachers that can work collaboratively to build the best possible resources for students.”
Congratulations Steven on your nomination.
